Reflections on 9/11 -- One Year Later

A commemorative program to mark the anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks and remember those who lost their lives will be held at noon Wednesday, Sept. 11, in the Price Center Plaza at the University of California, San Diego. Chancellor Robert C. Dynes has invited all members of the UCSD community to attend the one-half hour program of reflections on 9/11 and, for those who wish to do so, remain for a religious/spiritual service led by Mark Padrez, director of the Office of Religious Affairs at UCSD. Representatives from a number of faiths will join him in the service from 12:35 to 1 p.m. A highlight of the commemoration program will be dedication by Dynes, Jenn Brown, Associated Student president, and Tom Fleming, Graduate Student Representative, of a plaque and white orchid shade tree which will be planted at the west end of Warren Mall. The plaque inscription reads: "Dedicated to the Victims of September 11, 2001. The UCSD Community Remembers. September 11, 2002."

Religious/Spiritual Service

The service, which begins at 12:35,Sept. 11, in the Price Center Plaza, will be led by Mark Padrez, director of the Office of Religious Affaris at UCSD. Joining Padrez at the spiritual service will be Rabbi Lisa Goldstein, representing the Jewish community at UCSD; Lynn Neu, the Catholic community; Dr. Omar Abdeen, the Muslim community; Rock Hunter, representing the faculty/staff Christian Fellowship, and the Rev. Gary Anderson of the Wesley Foundation, who will speak on behalf of faiths not represented at the service.

Banner Honoring Victims to be Displayed

During the week of Sept. 9-13 a banner listing the 2,958 names of victims of the terrorist attacks will be displayed in the Price Center foyer, and later moved to other campus locations.

 

Scripps to Commemorate 9/11

Please note: Due to construction, parking is extremely limited at Scripps. Please use the shuttle
Scripps Institution of Oceanography will commemorate the anniversary of last year's tragic events of September 11th by opening the Scripps Pier from 3:00 to 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 11, 2002. Please feel free to walk on the pier that afternoon if you would like a peaceful place to reflect and remember. ARTS (A Reason to Survive) will provide two inspirational quilts made by children of San Diego showing their version of love, peace, and hope. Many of the other handmade quilts will be on exhibit at the Pentagon at this year's remembrance of 9/11. In honor of those who lost their lives and to note the impact of that day on the nation and the world, bagpipes will be played on the pier at 4:00 p.m. At 5:00 p.m., ten American flags will be raised and illuminated on the roof of the small building on the end of the pier. The flags will be lit each evening through Monday, September 16, 2003.
